52 Albums of 2019

Welp, here we are. Almost a full year since the last post – but I swear, 2020 is THEE year.

*Fast forward to January of 2021 where I am repeating this same line*. But really, going to make it a goal to write, reflect and post about topics, recipes, DIY’s, budgets, and anything else that I love in 2020. Stop the scrolling on my phone (seriously, go delete Tik Tok right now – that app is amazing but somehow a black hole) and use time wisely doing things that bring me joy and being present with those around me.

This year is going to also be the year of unapologetically being me. For awhile, I split my blog into a different (almost secret!) Instagram account because I was worried what my current followers would think and I’d lose followers. UHH HELLO. So lame, Claire!!! You, seriously, do you.

2019 brought SO much. A new career, pup (my best bud, Freddie!), an amazing partner who I seriously learn from everyday, tons of personal reflection, an almost full journal, mental health growth, new hobbies, friends and guess what – music! Goals are weird, because half the time, do we even stick to them? Why are we making that goal? I know myself, and when I make goals that are a littttle bit lofty and have no real reason to be making that goal, they rarely stick.

So in 2019, I went a different route. Instead of cutting out sugar, eating Whole30 or whatever you chose to do, I chose to add to my year.

In doing so, I listened to an album of music I had never listened to every week of the year. 52 new albums. And ya know what!!
I 👏 Did 👏 It 👏

The album genres range from Nashville Retro, Indie-Folk, Jazz, R&B to jam band. Thank you to those who responded to my Instagram question back in January 2019 with your favorite album (seriously, I have an Excel sheet with your album, artist and who recommended it) and anyone else who gave recommendations.
Many of the albums came from recs, while some came from me hearing one song but never listening to the full album all the way through or planning an upcoming concert. I personally think listening to an album all the way through (NEVER on shuffle!!!) can make an extremely big difference on understanding the music and what the artist wanted to get across.

So, below you will find the full list of albums and it’s genre, in week order, followed by my short review, rating and link to the Spotify album. I really really enjoyed this process because I got to connect with others over one of my favorite topics and found a sheeeet ton of new music. Can’t wait to see what music 2020 brings. (Seriously, DM me your favs if they didn’t make it onto the list below.)

  1. Waiting on a Song – Dan Auerbach ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Nashville Retro.
    2. Released: June 2 2017
    3. Standout song: Malibu Man
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/0OSYZ7EMRs14RPvwowd13F?si=vN2qptuBRCW2ygfXVWywIg
    5. Black Keys singer’s solo album – breezy, carefree. Soulful and retro vibe.
  2. Out on Parole – Koe Wetzel ⭐.5

    1. Red Dirt Country
    2. Released: Jan 5 2015
    3. Standout song: Lonely As it Gets
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/44JO7GNEuuUO9D3wE7u2Ii?si=x-LC2NIfSv2XBfJdtKFRxQ
    5. Concert was good, a few confusing songs on this album. I really dig the music and vibe he was going for, but sometimes his voice gets a little on my nerves. Can do about ~30 of each song.
  3. Heard it in a Past Life – Maggie Rogers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Indie Pop
    2. Released: Jan 18 2019
    3. Standout song: all of them 🙂
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/5AHWNPo3gllDmixgAoFru4?si=QsP6hxwoR8Kbv8eY0GbWyA
    5. All songs, every song. Maggie Rogers “found” her start with Pharrell a few years back when he heard the song ‘Alaska.’ It’s raw – reminds of when I first heard Robyn my freshman year of college on a ski trip. Rogers’ live performances (that I’ve seen online) have more soul than the recorded album, but still one of my favorite albums of the year. Distinct memories of listening to this while driving in a blizzard to the Dollar Theater on $2 Tuesdays to see A Star Is Born.
  4.  Suncity (EP) – Khalid ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Pop R&B
    2. Released: Oct 19 2018
    3. Standout song: all of them 🙂
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/2Qxc2NJ7yPKVFRWi3llRr2?si=-ZELGlgUSOu-ilJEmoHyjA
    5. I’m not sure what it is, but I always love intro’s and interludes on albums. For me, this give a glimpse of what the artist is trying to portray. With Khalid’s EP, I think he’s giving a glimpse into what is to come. This was safe, but there wasn’t a song that I wanted to turn off. (even as someone who isn’t the biggest Pop R&B fan.) Each song makes me want to slo-mo bob my head to them. A good sign? Not sure.
  5. Superdream – Big Wild ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Dance/Electronic
    2. Released: Feb 1 2019
    3. Standout song: all of them 🙂
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/7LZAgsQQr0cm61SmUdgKlz?si=d1sc7bMKSO-KO7iKnTFrMg
    5. YOO this album! My ANTHEM of 2019. Can’t tell you where I discovered it (probably Spotify) but holy cow – thank you thank you thank you Jackson Stell. Every song, every beat drop, every beautiful chorus. I ended up buying a solo ticket to this concert when he came in November to Sokol and BOY am I glad I did. I ended up meeting up with some friends and grooved so hard all night. It was an absolute dream. He was a thoughtful, kind performer and seemed to really enjoy the crowd.
  6. An Awesome Wave – Alt J ⭐⭐

    1. Indie Rock
    2. Released: May 25 2012
    3. Standout song: n/a
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/6k3vC8nep1BfqAIJ81L6OL?si=qOcGzYv7T1mdyh-gQAjF3g
    5. I’ve always wanted to get super into Alt-J because I’ve always felt like I *should* be? But I just can’t. I’m sorry. I appreciate their music but one time I pictured them recording while plugging their noses to make their voices sound like what they do and now I can’t get that image out of my head. I don’t mind it for some quiet background music. Maybe for an indie-photo montage? It fits in somewhere. Just not quite with me.
  7. Golden Hour – Kacey Musgraves ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Country Pop
    2. Released: March 30 2018
    3. Standout song: Rainbow
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/7f6xPqyaolTiziKf5R5Z0c?si=4tWjy_KcThiUChzGv0U-Ug
    5. Ah – Kacey Musgraves. The one who I thought I would never like after Merry Go Round but now that she’s emerged as a Dolly Parton disco-country icon, I can’t get enough. Distinct memories of listening to Rainbow at my desk and getting sweaty eyes (tearing up.) Also Space Cowboy did wonders when trying to get over the last hill of a breakup. Be free – space cowboy! Add her to the list of artists on the Concert-See list.
  8. Moondance – Van Moorison ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Soft Rock
    2. Released: Jan 27, 1970
    3. Standout song:
    4. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/5PfnCqRbdfIDMb1x3MPQam?si=eAQpZabzS9qcXtglr224SA
    5. Mmm Van Morrison. Reminds me of my mom. Can’t believe I had never listened to this album all the way through but will always love a good classic.
  9. Mescalito – Ryan Bingham ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Country, Folk
    2. Oct 2, 2007
    3. Bread and Water
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/42sqfix0LCG84XUSOJ0L1D?si=2UKTgE0MTzCurrUxTDsskw
    5. Alright YALL. This dude. He dresses like the male-version of Kasey. Polyester bell bottoms with a disco ball at his concert. But he is raw and real and his music is bad ass.
  10. MELT – Shaed ⭐⭐⭐.25

    1. Indie Pop
    2. September 21, 2018
    3. Melt
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/3WSazrD65bFptRnMvnesVH?si=gtdL_hhrTguFsY5GAWGd0A
    5. Probably one of the more “mainstream” albums on this list – but super good! I think there’s currently one radio hit, but that’s one of my favorite reasons for doing this. Listening to the rest of the album where the radio hit came from.
  11. Both Sides of the Ceiling – Duncan Fellows⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. 2017
    2. https://open.spotify.com/album/1DprfD74WEpXZtUISY3y9H?si=SE6jmoJURZONa-ZiBfPBJA
    3. Oh I liked this one. It gave me Local Native vibes but a little more carefree. I like how he goes into some ‘pop anthem’ parts and then draws out the vocals a bit more. V fun! Looking forward to listening to more of his.
  12. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – Ms. Lauryn Hill⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Hip Hop, R&B
    2. August 25, 1998
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/1BZoqf8Zje5nGdwZhOjAtD?si=zbtbYavdTkeJ9ylAl8tqxw
    4. Ok so I know there is SO much history with this album. And I’m so glad I was finally able to sit down and listen to it. As someone who isn’t the biggest R&B/Hip-Hop fan, this is excellent and worth the history making.
  13. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Billie Eilish ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Pop
    2. 3/29/2019
    3. when the party’s over
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/0S0KGZnfBGSIssfF54WSJh?si=BgZ2IsZMRdCP-tYW7bTjuQ
    5. Billie, Billie, Billie. Oh how I have grown to LOVE you. You are so intriguing. Why can’t I stop listening to this album? Literally all year? It makes me happy and then brings me down into the ground for a big ole-depression slap. I thought you were for 14 year olds.. and even so – SUE ME. I love this album. Surprisingly in my top 10 of the year.
  14. Sound of Silver – LCD Soundsystem ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Rock, Dance-Punk
    2. March 12, 2007
    3. All My Friends, Us V Them
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/1R8kkopLT4IAxzMMkjic6X?si=Tz-ZSXiPQZuMXwIG3CG_Dw
    5. Another freshman year of college throwback. These dudes have always been so interesting to me, but I always go back and they never disappoint.
  15. Life is Good on the Open Road – Trampled By Turtles ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Bluegrass
    2. May 4, 2018
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/0QlWQz2syFKNHZWcx3bSX5?si=8ZCmflgLQTyApT2PpWZGmQ
    4. TBT theseeee guys! So good. Absolute jam. Even better live. 10/10 would see live again.
  16. Birthplace – Novo Amor ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Indie
    2. October 19, 2018
    3. Emigrate
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/0tWckYjFI6ioZptLr42J3p?si=ABEad6ihSj2_ld5zbmkR6A
    5. Very much into this ‘atmospheric folk’ genre that I guess is a thing! Bon Iver meets… chill wave? Sends calmness over me when I need it the most. Surprised by this album, for the better.
  17. I Love You. It’s a Fever Dream. – The Tallest Man on Earth ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Indie Folk
    2. April 19, 2019
    3. I’m a Stranger Now
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/0xslWXhRXD9yYL8ZV5n41r?si=DTH9p84zShCKXGabCeHqqQ
    5. Oh now what an interesting character. Typically, I wouldn’t be super into someone who tries to make their voice sound extremely indie/folk (re: Alt J) but this guy is just.. different. I saw him in concert last spring and he didn’t really say much to the crowd, kinda just did his own thing. His music makes me feel safe. Also very fond memories of this concert.
  18. Mt. Joy Mt. Joy ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Indie Rock
    2. March 2, 2018
    3. Younger Days
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/5h9FO7QRZMcrcnSYvihQ01?si=yKDzkBBARH2RQ–4h_QuDQ
    5. Love this self-titled album. Makes you want to frolick around Colorado or somewhere with wide open spaces and not a dang thing to be responsible for.
  19. The Execution of All Things  – Rilo Kiley ⭐⭐

    1. Indie Rock/Pop
    2. Oct 1, 2002
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/23EqcK0ZR1ravQaEsGpQyH?si=TzaJdjGERSOhml5B2x-fuA
    4. A good ole’ Saddle Creek Records album. As an Omaha-ian who grew up listening (and attempting to like Conor Oberst) I had to do Rilo a solid and listen to this album. It gave me nostalgia of listening to their old singles on my iPod in the mid-2000s. It was a fun album. Tride and true to Omaha, it’s feel good. Just like home.
  20. Burn Right Through (EP) – Sons of the East ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Alternative/Indie
    2. May 10, 2019
    3. Nothing Comes Easy
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/2Xh8UFP8PhWhMm3qGcw2em?si=qa2-tQiCRFC9OJdaA6JIYA
    5. Rustic and chill. Give me more!
  21. Ambivalence Avenue – Bibio ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Folk/electronica/atmospheric
    2. June 22, 2009
    3. lovers’ carvings
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/7ybrct8gCd1mWsHS32ID8w?si=z2oYyD2RRpuQ9NB6xoXD1g
    5. Ok back to this atmopshereic/folk genre. Take that PLUS groovy and boom, ya got Bibio. This stuff is interesting I’m telling you. But if you have any groovy bone in your body, give this a listen.
  22. Indiana (EP) – Briston Maroney ⭐⭐

    1. Alt/Indie
    2. May 17, 2019
    3. Caroline
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/7nfm0AkAW1WqxJ167DHuXV?si=5b7L4UusRiCUpSa_e9ygfQ
    5. Doesn’t stick out too much – I wouldn’t say there isn’t anything ~special~ about it, but kind of. Still pretty good though.
  23. Rumours – Fleetwood Mac ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Soft Rock
    2. 4 February 1977
    3. https://open.spotify.com/artist/08GQAI4eElDnROBrJRGE0X?si=BPKlL2KsQMOilWh8RRiz2Q
    4. An always classic. Still have beef with them for cutting their LNK concert short many years ago after 30 min. My $90 nosebleed tickets shake their fist at you, Mick.
  24. False River – Andrew Duhon⭐⭐⭐

    1. Folk
    2. May 25, 2018
    3. Let You Down, Street Fair
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/20A2nwfms2J2bIaKNEUhlm?si=hU7DKUuNTSirgJ8LqbaWRA
    5. A recommendation from my Dad, so will always think of him when listening to Andrew Duhon. Folkish. Good easy listening tracks – really enjoy him and on the lookout for his tour dates.
  25. farmland – Gabe Lee ⭐⭐

    1. Country/Folk
    2. March 22, 2019
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/7HD3bbzKRfWsKX5KvaQTe4?si=jXwhUdAyQdCcPIMoua2kVA
    4. His harmonica got me hooked – his voice is ok. A little too twangy sometimes. Although I think would make for a great concert. A little Bob Dylan-y.
  26. From Muscle Shoals – Foy Vance ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Alt Rock/Blues
    2. June 28, 2019
    3. Pain Never Hurt Me Like Love
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/7Llh51MCW3JF6e7A56E5qq?si=cmE4NfcpR3WfXACZsFxm8A
    5. Yesss Foy! People always think I am talking about Vance Joy because what a weird coincidence in that first and last name but no no – this dude kills it. I don’t think I’ve found a song that I don’t like. Straight from the soul. Blues. Mmm yes.
  27. And Then Like Lions – Blind Pilot ⭐⭐.5

    1. Indie Folk
    2. August 12, 2016
    3. Umpqua Rushing
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/418oi1Imgo60hxDgjSsDKZ?si=MwHbiay6RR-shpgmH-19JQ
    5. Yes, the indie band you listened to in the mid 2000s. Their new album is worth a listen. Less Postal Service-y this time around.
  28. Illiterate Light – Illiterate Light ⭐⭐⭐.5

    1. Better Than I Used To
    2. https://open.spotify.com/album/101nIHm9fdR1wLMgjiLmhT?si=DGgXXdZqTQOHmH0pfnBNPg
    3. Here again with the atmospheric folk! These dues rock. Would love to see them in concert. Great summer listen. Would be awesome in a small festival lineup.
  29. We Like it Here – Snarky Puppy ⭐⭐

    1. Jazz Fusion
    2. February 25, 2014
    3. Lingus
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/4GzjQ0xXRlLl78ih481BUi?si=wS8cZO-FTqyIm6QwO3RGKg
    5. Known as a ‘jazz jam band’ I believe? Pretty groovy. A few songs on the album I enjoy while the others become just a bit much.
  30. Ten – Pearl Jam ⭐⭐⭐

    1. Rock
    2. August 27, 1991
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/5B4PYA7wNN4WdEXdIJu58a?si=SZ3-PVhQRD-JruXTnX_Kfg
    4. Wanted to like this more. Have always been a big Eddie Vedder fan, but maybe more on the solo front?
  31. Reconstructions – Don Diablo ⭐⭐.5

    1. EDM
    2. Jan 12, 2018
    3. Children of a Miracle
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/5bOGQyXUjy5VcCTbPI5fYz?si=gQe_4KxTQfaSJYoV8HoRVg
    5. So I took up this crazy af hobby this year called RUNNING. Don Diablo got me through much of that. There’s one song called Brave by jim that’s not on this album, but sparked me to listen to the rest of his stuff. V fun. V clubby. Get ready to party or run your socks off.
  32. By and By –  Caamp ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Folk
    2. July 26, 2019
    3. Peach Fuzz
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/4Ib3LE6FimfhNVnY7Tc1zM?si=P5LNfip8Qk27lz9tYy08ew
    5. This concert was fueled by their lovely music and Hamm’s beer. It pulls you up and down in the emotions, but you want to be taken with. Only qualm was that I wish their concert was 2 hours longer.
  33. Springside – Clay Finnesand ⭐⭐⭐

    1. Christian/Gospel
    2. August 2, 2019
    3. R.G.T., October
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/5HeDsu4d1wLNzL4iJ3yXwt?si=GuEW9S41QByK3_N7396uRQ
    5. So in 2019, I started listening to K-Love. Yes, the slightly cheesy Christian radio station. It makes you feel good and happy. And so does Clay’s album.
  34. Cuz I Love You – Lizzo ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Pop/Hip-Hop
    2. April 19, 2019
    3. Like a Girl

    5. YAS. That’s all. You already know. Shake yo ass and listen to Lizzo you punks.
  35. Tides of a Teardrop – Mandolin Orange ⭐⭐⭐.5

    3. Suspended in Heaven
    4. https://open.spotify.com/album/09NM7gTdr3ij71aksxr4Qs?si=86M1S2X1TsKiZEIeUIlb1w
    5. I’m sorry I listen to so much chill music and this is another. But it’s quite nice and I’d listen again.
  36. i,i – Bon Iver ⭐⭐

    1. Indie Folk
    2. August 9, 2019
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/54DU59anGQsdrFP7utpshG?si=poDujw7zQ_yH4_LYOxn7CQ
    4. Damn. Really wanted more with this. Maybe I think nothing will beat his older albums and laying on top of my bed in college listening to them on vinyl, but didn’t get that with this album unfortunately.
  37. Unarmored – Sam Burtchfield ⭐⭐⭐

    1. Soulful Folk
    2. 2016
    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/3KUoEU1Ca5gLNl3f4Iso3p?si=NhaCEqPyQfG2070ZmXjVNw
    4. Guess what! More acoustic chill music. But Sam is good. Not too chill in the way you want to sleep, but along the lines of you are doing that hand-ocean-wave-thing out your car window in the summer.
  38. III – The Lumineers ⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. Indie Folk
    2. September 13, 2019

    4. Getting mainstream and I don’t even care! I love them and always will! Can’t wait to see them again in March. Highly recommend watching their ‘Behind the Lyrics” on Spotify to get more in-depth knowledge of this album. It’s quite deep and depressing but seems to mean quite a bit to the band. Gotta love it.

    5. TBH – I listened to Midnight Oil because it reminded me of the 80’s band “Midnight Oil.” Didn’t disappoint – nothing extremely standout here but wouldn’t change the song necessarily.

    5. Love the music and instruments used. Not a huge fan of his voice but the songs do have real lyrics and tell a good story.

    3. https://open.spotify.com/album/7GpuEZzRrPT4IGiEuWaBzy?si=HUREJo19S2KpRuxXjt087Q
    4. Ok this is on another level than Don Diablo lol. This is some deep trap/house stuff. But I like the features he has in some of the songs and I dont know, trap and EDM-ish will always be my guilty pleasure.

    5. Just not a whole lot goin on here. Speaker louder, Noah. The whisper-like of this album seems extremely overdone. But he’s not bad?
